Chemical Contaminants: Lead poisoning may be a health risk associated with some of the commercial spices. A study conducted in U.S cities demonstrated high levels of lead contamination in commercial cinnamon.

Toxic Ingredients: Other spices such as tonka beans contain coumarin and wide intake may be detrimental since coumarin has blood-thin properties.
Mold Toxins: The presence of aflatoxins in hot paprika has been noted, and these are poisonous toxins produced by molds.
Hormonal and Neurological Effects: Studies have indicated that some flavor enhancers present in the processed spices may be harmful to hormones and some elements of the nervous system and are even carcinogenic.
While spices may not be harmful at low levels and have several benefits, they are best not to be ingested in high proportions because of adverse effects.
